John 8:32 “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”

John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life…”

What is the truth?

Is truth something that I define? Can anyone really know the truth? Surely it is arrogant and exclusive to say that truth is absolute, that there is really only ‘one truth’, one way?

In our politically correct, equality driven modern ways of thinking this statement that Jesus makes to His followers seems both arrogant and offensive. How could anyone possibly make the claim to be THE way, THE truth, and THE life? Here in this verse, Jesus makes what seems to be an outrageous statement. These are bold words and potentially offensive to His listeners. Surely to make a statement like this is to be exclusive rather than inclusive, it sounds proud rather than humble, it's narrow, not broad. No one can make a claim to be THE truth! Can anyone always be right? Can anyone claim that there is absolute truth? The answer, of course, is yes. Jesus puts Himself up as THE definition of truth. He is THE final word on all things. John describes Him as THE Word made flesh. He has absolute integrity, His word’s and His life connect perfectly they are the same, He is who He says He is.

This is so exciting and such good news! The whole world is in search of authenticity and truth. We have been lied to so much by so many that its difficult to know what is true and what isn’t. Successive governments and their leadership have said one thing and then back tracked later, some it would appear has actually lied. In our everyday lives, we have bought things that have been promised by their advertiser’s as the solution to our particular need but so often we discover that they just don’t work, we feel we have been sold a lie. This results in mistrust and even suspicion, who can we trust anymore? Jesus declaration is as profound today as the day He first made it. There is hope, you can trust someone again, He is THE truth. Look for a definition of truth nowhere else!

Question: Who have you encouraged this week in their pursuit of Christ and His word?

Lord I accept that you are THE truth, you have the words of eternal life. I can confidently give myself to your commands for they are true and always right. Forgive me for looking for answers elsewhere, redirect me towards you at all times.
